Stafford Kit Car show. Thought that I would be able to pick up some useful stuff, but ended up only buying a few wire brushes to be used while cleaning up the donor bits I'll be picking up next weekend. There was a decent range of cars on display at the show, and plenty of interest at the Tiger stand. Saw the Storm with the rear spoiler fixed on for the first time, though I had seen the spoiler itself at Thorney the last time I was there. Definitely improves the back end of it. Also some dark patches had been stuck under the light covers, which I personally don't like at all.

Trip to Tiger to pick up donor kit, which consisted of the 5 speed Sierra gearbox, bellhousing and mounting plate (actually had a choice of about 10 gearboxes so picked the cleanest and quietest one, though as this means that there is no chance of the engine and gearbox matching I will probably end up with a Q plate), modified mk 4/5 Cortina rear axle and drum brakes, mk 2 Golf front uprights and disk brakes (not actually the vented GTI ones I expected, but will apparently take the vented disks), mk 2 Golf steering column, Sierra starter motor, alternator and distributor/ignition, and a Ford handbrake. Didn't pick up the engine as I'm getting that rebuilt by Tiger, which should be ready when I pick up the chassis.

Everything was piled into the car, tightly wrapped in various rags, newspapers and plastic bags to keep the oil and muck out of the boot. Once home, all of the bits were transferred to the garage, and stood on more newspaper.

The donor bits

19/3/2000
Not much done today, but got the front brake calipers taken to bits with the help of some good old WD-40 on the tightest bolts and some standing on the socket wrench handle. Also got some extra shelves put up in the garage.

A day off work! Invested in a couple of old knives and a spoon from a charity shop (definitely well worth 30p), and made a decent start on scraping off the muck and oil with the help of my brother. We got most of the gearbox done, as well as the front brakes and the rear drums. Also picked up some engine degreaser, rustproofing primer, and some Hammerite smooth paint to do the donor suspension/braking bits in a tasteful shade of green (who says everything has to be black?).

21/3/2000
Another day off work. Got the rest of the gearbox and the rear axle cleaned. Degreased the outside of the gearbox bellhousing, the rear drums, the front calipers, and the rear axle, and made a start of priming some of the bits using a rustproof/eating primer.

28/3/2000
More priming done on the rear axle and brake bits.

29/3/2000
Primed the other side of the rear axle.

30/3/2000
Gave the axle its final coat of primer.

Total hours this month - 14
