The Build
1999 2000 Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec 2001 2002 2003

1/4/2000
Ordered a set of wheels (15x7 inches, with Avon 195/50 tyres), a pair of seats (Cobra Roadster 7s in BRG), and replacement bearings and piston seals for the front uprights.

Found out later on in the build that the offset of the wheels was wrong - it is 38 instead of around 22, so always make sure to check the offset when you buy a new set of wheels.

8/4/2000
Picked up the wheels and bearings, but apparently there is a sudden rush of people buying brake cylinder seals, so will have to try somewhere else...

20/4/2000
Made a start on replacing the front bearings. First the hubs were knocked out of the uprights, taking the inner race of the bearing with it on one side, and leaving the whole bearing in the upright on the other side. The inner race was then knocked off the hub, and the outer races were bashed out of the uprights using a turned piece of aluminium exactly the same size as the outer race. Took a lot of force, but with no access to a press, it was the only way to get the old bearings out.

Ordered a pair of front vented disks, rear drum brake cylinders, and front caliper seal kits, as the first supplier wasn't able to get any.

21/4/2000
Putting the new bearings back in was a lot easier, with the help of a freezer and an airing cupboard...

The uprights were heated up, and the bearings were cooled down. This made putting the bearings into the uprights a lot easier than taking the old ones out - a few (heavy) taps with a hammer, using the outer shell from the destroyed bearing and the alloy disk to push with, and in they went, using one of the circlips to stop it coming back out the other side.

Then, the uprights and bearings were heated up, the hubs were cooled down, and the process repeated by bashing the bearings onto the hubs. All relatively easy...

22/4/2000
Picked up the disks and brake cylinders, and a torque wrench to make sure I don't tighten anything too much.

27/4/2000
Gave the front uprights a coat of primer, ready to do a big batch of final painting over the weekend.

29/4/2000
Painted the drums, brake caliper holders, uprights and axle with green Hammerite smooth.

Cleaned, degreased and primed the drum backing plates.
